Wildflower closeups are indeed the most intimate of all the intimate landscapes in the upland forests of Southern Indiana, the Hoosier National Forest, and the Charles C. Deam Wilderness.
They’re also among the most challenging. They are tiny and fragile. They’re only around a few weeks a year, at most. They require shooting from the knees or the belly. And any wisp of a breeze and the focus is gone.
Here’s a sample of wildflowers I captured in the Deam Wilderness when I began shooting color in the early 1980s for a slideshow, and when revisiting 35 years later for a couple book projects — when I could still work at belly level.
